Bottom of the Gorge

View of bottom View at bottom
Thse photos provides a comparison of the tourist observation area and the railroad tracks and bridge at the bottom of the gorge as viewed from the top on the south side and from the bottom of the gorge. The views are toward the west. Note the power pole west of the little brown building near the bottom of the left photo. This pole is visible behind and to the side of the woman with the little girl in the photo on the right. Further west is the stairway leading up to the observation platform and the walkway over the railroad tracks. The buildings further west are the inclined elevator terminal and shops. The white angled beam structures crossing the river near the top of the photo provide support for the railroad bridge. The bridge is supported above the river against the sheer cliff on the south side of the gorge.
Bottom of Gorge
This is a view across the river from the observation area at the bottom of the gorge. The photo was taken from a position east of the little building in the upper photo. The remains of a wooden 'hoop and stave' water pipe is visible running along the cliffside on the south side of the gorge. The pipe supplied water for an application of some sort back in the old days.
Inclined Elevator This is a view up the tracks of the inclined elevator to the top of the gorge. There are two cars connected to opposite ends of a cable. As one car comes down, the other goes up. Most of the track length has three rails, but at the halfway point the rails are curved slightly away from each other so that there are two sets of two rails and the cars can pass. A car is coming down on the left two rails and the other car is nearing the top and is almost too small to be seen in this photo.
